Zalman-Wainhaus_edited.jpg

Zalman Wainhaus is a contemporary painter whose work captures the raw, shifting beauty of the American Southwest. Entirely self-taught, Wainhaus has eschewed the traditional studio classroom in favor of a rigorous, immersive education directly from nature.

Painting on location three to four times a week, he braves the volatile elements of the desert to work primarily from life. His practice is defined by hundreds of hours spent observing the complex geology of regions like Red Rock Canyon and the high desert escarpments of the Colorado Plataeu. This relentless field practice grants him an intimate understanding of the desert's distinct atmospheric depth, iron-oxide color shifts, and fleeting light patterns.

Working in both oils and acrylics, Wainhaus translates the monumentality of canyon walls and desert vistas into balanced, structured compositions. His paintings do not merely replicate a landscape; they document a direct, physical dialogue with the environment. Wainhaus lives and works in Las Vegas, Nevada, where he continues to explore the endless narrative of the desert sun and stone.
